i) Construction of Shelter for the Poor Living
in Slum Areas
There are number of industries in this
city which are attracting people to migrate in this
city for economic activities. Most of the migrated people
are daylabourer, rickshaw puller etc. engaged in low-income
jobs and living in slum areas. According to 2001, Master
Plan there are 172 small and large slum in Khulna Metropolitan
area. The conditions of this slum areas are awfully
unhygienic, with inadequate services and facilities.
Khulna Development Authority implemented two residential
neighborhood schemes for the low-income group people.
But that did not fulfil the prime need of habitation
for the low-income group people or slum dwellers. The
high construction cost and very low economic status
of the people of Khulna City is the cause of extreme
slow growth of housing in this city. To rehabilitate
the slum dwellers and low-income group people, KDA is
thinking to take initiatives to build multistoried-flat
housing scheme for the low-income group people (within
the income level Tk.2,500/- per month) with a marginal
price in several terms payment condition and could be
without any interest.
