In case of Bangladesh present rate of urbanisation is 25-30% and the present population in the cities are approximately 3 crore (30 million). In one of the statistics, shown by Centre for Urban Studies, in next 10 years our population in the cities will become 70 million. That is how it is seen that in every 12 years the population is becoming almost double in the cities of our country. By that we can say that by the years 2015 our population in the cities will be double than what we have now.

In the rural areas, due to poverty, people are day by day getting allured towards the cities. That is how our cities are all becoming Mega cities with less of urban facilities required for a decent level of living in the cities. In many cases our cities are almost becoming unlivable. If we look at the bigger cities of our country like Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi etc. we will see that unplanned developments are alarmingly on the rise than that of planned development.

In one of the statistics, it is seen, Dhaka will become the second largest agglomeration in the world in the year 2015. Mumbai will be 3rd and Delhi will be in 5th position. Tokyo will still retain its 1st position.

In this new millennium and the era of globalisation cities are the core of a country's economic development. Cities are the focal points where better services and the best facilities such as education, health, recreation, transportation, housing, safety and security and others are made available.
