Urban
Planning
Most important function
of KDA is to formulate Master Plans for Khulna City.
Khulna is a linear-shaped city and developed along
the natural levees of the river Rupsha and Bhairab.
Unlike Dhaka, Khulna is the city, which is still virgin
and can be made a planned city.
A
master plan comprising of 181 sq. km was assigned
in the initial stage in 1961. A new and revised master
plan comprising of 451 sq. km (two point five times
larger than the previous one) was prepared and approved
by the govt. in June 2001. A further expansion of
the master plan comprising of sq.KM extended upto
the Mongla port has already been under taken.
The 2001 Master Plan made a number of specific development
proposals for execution in an area of 451 sq. km.
The major areas of proposals are transport and communication,
housing, public buildings, industry, utility services,
open space and land for specific purposes. KDA could
implement some of the proposals of this plan in transportation,
housing, industry, slum development and utility services
sectors.
In the new plan, proposals have been made on economy
and employment, housing, traffic and transportation,
drainage, sanitation, solid waste management, social
services, open space and recreation, conservation
of urban heritage, environmental management and urban
governance, capacity building etc.
